Hardness

In general, a measure of the concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in water, often expressed in milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre of water.  Water that is too “hard” will taste bad and may leave scaly deposits on surfaces and skin.  Water that is too “hard” is usually treated with the addition of “softeners”.
