GLOSSARY

Atypical colonies

Most bacteria are harmless, some are beneficial and some are dangerous if ingested. Bacteria known as coliform (see Coliform) cause intestinal distress in humans.  When the concentration of coliform bacteria exceeds 200 cfu/100ml of water, the colony of bacteria is said to be atypical, meaning the coliform content is exceptionally high.
